Lose track of time in one of the metro areas top attractions, the Colorado Railroad Museum, the largest narrow gauge museum in the Rocky Mountain West featuring over 100 historic engines, cabooses and coaches.

The Museum, a replica of an 1880's depot, features Colorado rail history exhibits and General Store. The Museum includes the Denver HO Club model railroad layout and the Denver Garden Railway exhibit outside.

Open year round, the Museum has frequent steam-up opportunities for guests to ride behind a steam locomotive from another era. Visit the internationally renowned Museum library that houses an extensive collection of railroad material. Or the roundhouse restoration facility, a replica of an early 1900’s roundhouse with a working turntable.

This museum offers educational and exotic mineral, fossil, gemstone, meteorite, and historic mining displays on two floors. Highlights include an introductory video on area geology, as well as interactive displays on radioactivity and ultraviolet minerals. A Special Exhibit Room hosts prominent precious metal and changing exhibits. Irwin Hoffman’s mining murals grace the main gallery. An outdoor geologic trail features outcrops containing fossilized dinosaur tracks, logs, and leaves. Guided tours are available by appointment. 
 
DINOSAUR RIDGE
Our free, world-famous, interpretive outdoor trail includes 300+ dinosaur tracks and a historic dinosaur bone quarry. A NEW indoor exhibit, "Trek Through Time," depicts conditions in the Age of Dinosaurs represented by fossil evidence at Dinosaur Ridge. Murals, maps, fossils and hands-on activities are for young and old.

Free monthly programs are at our Visitor Center on the first Saturday between May and October. Guided tours are available on a reservation only basis for families, groups, and schools – please call for more information.

Set amidst a spectacular sculpture garden and cloud-reaching pine trees, Foothills Art Center boasts 40 years of extraordinary exhibitions on Golden’s main street. Located on the corner of 15th and Washington, Foothills Art Center is housed in a renovated church built in 1872 and is listed on the National Historic Register. Explore galleries featuring exhibitions such as the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia watercolor show, or deck the halls and find all of your holiday needs at the annual Holiday Art Market open during November and December. In our gift shop, original stained glass windows reflect Colorado sunshine onto the work of over 70 local artists. Golden History Museums is the starting place for Golden’s unique history, people, and places. Begin your visit at the Golden History Center to discover the history of Golden from its founding. After that, walk across the creek and amble through the Clear Creek History Park. Peek in the windows of our historic cabins and one room schoolhouse, and don’t forget to greet the chickens. Last stop the Astor House, a historic boarding house that provided hot meals and comfortable accommodations to everyone from miners, to legislators, to School of Mines students.

GLA is a volunteer organization that is actively involved with preserving the structures, natural features and artifacts of historical significance in and around Golden. View our collection of old photographs at our office and on our web site, and copies can be purchased. Volunteers are needed for our latest projects; one is the restoration of the old Brickyard House on Golden Gate Canyon Road. An example of bricks made in Golden at the turn of the century is the Spaghetti Factory in Denver. We also research Golden’s history and share these stories with the public.

Golden Oldy Cyclery is a private home Museum of Sustainability. The 30 year old structure is updated to become CARBON NEGATIVE which is, of itself, one of the exhibits. It is the 1st "Carbon Negative Museum" in the World. It focuses the Sustainability theme in 3 ways: 1) Transportation Sustainability, 2) Home Sustainability & 3) Food Sustainability. Hence the subtitle: " The Sustainable Museum of Sustainable Transportation."   The professionally displayed and interpreted exhibits are in 5 Classes: Victorian Bicycles, Victorian Bicycle Library, Victorian Bicycle Photo Galleries, Victorian Bicycling Poetry, Permaculture, Solar Powered Electric Cars & Home Energy Upgrades.    
The Staff does outreach work by providing PowerPoint Lectures to interested groups in most of these areas, as well as by loaning materials to other Front Range museums. Visits are by appointment or at announced open houses.

The Golden Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1920 with tourism as one of the primary reasons.   They organize many special events each year, including First Fridays, Golden Family Easter,  the Wild West Auto Round-Up, the Farmer's Market, the Fine Arts Festival, Halloween Crazy Days, the Candlelight Walk, and Olde Golden Christmas.  The office of the Golden Chamber of Commerce is located within the Visitors Center and offers assistance to businesses, tourists, conferences, and anyone who stops in.

Lookout Mountain Nature Center is open year-round, Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. During the Summer (between Memorial Day and Labor Day), our weekend hours are 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. We are closed on Monday.
