through August 2nd Sisters in Cloth: A Collection of Works by African American Textile Artists

Quilts in this exhibit span the spectrum of quilt styles, from the traditional to the contemporary, and showcase the varied works in design, inspiration, and meaning for present-day African American textile artists. Each quilt tells a story for its artist and emote messages through its fabric.

Contemporary quilt artists featured in this exhibit have researched and explored the fabrics, techniques and tools used by quilters in the 18th and 19th centuries. The quilts and bed coverings featured in this show are contemporary reproductions and interpretations of originals. These quilts and coverings were originally produced for the American Quilt Study Group’s 2006 Seminar, and have since traveled to various venues throughout the country.

With a creative attitude toward landscape painting, instructor Kathy Beekman will lead you through this innovative and lighthearted class. Aiming at helping you discover the importance of properly placed horizon lines, students will learn what a low and high horizon line accomplishes and where best to place your horizons. If you are looking for more arresting and unexpected compositional qualities in your work, then this is the class for you. May 22 Keep Your Good Days From Going Bad: Backcountry Safety with the Alpine Rescue Team
The Alpine Rescue Team begins a partnership with the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum to present a safety series, with the first presentation focusing on “Backcountry Safety,” how a few strategic steps in planning can keep a good day from going bad or keep a day gone bad from turning into a really bad day.

Imagine being stranded in the backcountry of the Colorado mountains without appropriate overnight gear, tools, or food. What do you do? This class will teach you the basics of safety and how to ensure that you are prepared mentally and physically for a day or overnight in the mountains of Colorado.

The Alpine Rescue Team of Evergreen, Colorado, is a mountain search and rescue unit dedicated to saving lives through search, rescue, and mountain safety education. The Team is composed entirely of volunteers and is available upon request to help in mountain search and rescue problems anywhere, under the authority of local jurisdiction agencies. They participate in 80 to 100 field missions per year, generally divided equally between rescues and searches.

Tickets sales will benefit education development within the museum.

May 24 Pine Needle Basketry with Linda Gibbons
The ancient art of pine needle basketry uses a coiling and stitching technique that is surprisingly easy to learn. This one-day workshop includes how to gather/prep pine needles, coiling, shaping, types of stitches, and finishing. June 7 Dinosaur Discovery Day:  National Trails Day
Help celebrate National Trails Day, a free day at the world-famous Dinosaur Ridge Interpretive Trail. Alameda Parkway over Dinosaur Ridge will be closed to vehicles as experts stationed along the trail explain features and answer questions. Visitors can hike at their own pace or take the shuttle bus ($2 per person, 4 and under ride free).

Take photos of your youngster with special guest, Triceratops Equis, a live dinosaur that will amaze and astound. Also for kids, the Hands-On-Dinos at the Visitor Center includes the Allosaurus Bone Boulder, the Edmontosaurus Dig, the Grallaator Track Painting, and the Stegosaurus Branding.

Using a gourd as a base, learn beginning and advanced pine needle coiling techniques with colorful waxed linen. Well-known throughout the Denver area and admired as a sly humorist and an innovative guitarist, Chuck Pyle (aka the "Zen Cowboy") has performed for the Colorado Legislature, on Austin City Limits, and at Bill Gates' home. He's had his songs recorded by John Denver, Chris LeDoux, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Jerry Jeff Walker. An outdoors day camp. Revel in the wonder of the great outdoors as we hike, fish, climb, explore, and enjoy our mountainous region. Join us for a very fun workshop where we will explore our imaginations to create anything and everything from 3-D bugs to turtle tambourines. We will also paint rocks and sculpt animals out of Fimo clay. Enjoy a luncheon or dessert tea with a dramatic performance.

Jack Stone presents a portrait of early Denver from a gambler's point-of-view. Hear about the lives of saloon keepers, gold prospectors, and other unsavory characters.  Learn the surprising real history of the Denver we know today.

Luncheon is a full meal of scones, finger sandwiches, salad, and desserts ($25). Just Desserts treats you to scones and desserts ($15). Stroll through the Astor House Museum and Clear Creek History Park along the Golden Candlelight Walk. Watch traditional dancers and warm yourself with hot chocolate at the Park; enjoy our festive Victorian holiday decor at the Astor House. Free admission.  7:00 to 9:00pm.
